Frequently we share a different historic image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Do you recognize this Essex home? Where is it — which street(s)? How has it changed compared with today?
Here is what the community had to say:
Theresa Borden: It’s the post office
That’s right! Today this building is the town post office. It is also the headquarters of the CFES Brilliant Pathways organization. Though once upon a time this building was a movie theatre. At another point in time it was also home to a restaurant/diner — and it might also be in this photo as the right side has some signs that might point to that. Do you know any more about it’s other uses?
It was built by the Van Ornam family in the 1930s after a fire destroyed the brick building previously standing in it’s place on Main Street. Do you have any other anecdotes or thoughts to share about it?
Take a look at other vintage photos of the Van Ornam building here.
Below is the back side of this postcard. There no additional information there as it was never mailed.

The left end of the picture was Myrtles diner. (Home of the best doughnuts around). The middle part was Geri Van Ornams office and the right side was the post office.
