Every week we share a different image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The last image we shared is shown above.
During these hot days of summer, let’s take a look back at this vintage postcard of some ice harvesters on Lake Champlain. When do you think this dates to? Do you recognize the buildings in the background? Any thoughts to share?
The caption tells us this is on the Lake near Plattsburgh, NY (or Plattsburg as it is spelled on the postcard). As Dianne Lansing guessed on Facebook: “Is this in Plattsburgh with the present Champlain Community College in the background?” that building in the background is what becomes Clinton Community College.
Kathleen Foster Dolan shared a link to the Antique Ice Tool Museum if you’re interested in learning more about this old practice: www.antiqueicetoolmuseum.org.
Below you can see the back side of the postcard, and the postage stamp tells us that it was sent in 1909 so the image likely dates close to that year.
