Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
This is an old postcard featuring Hotel Champlain. The caption reads, “Hotel Champlain, Lake Champlain, NY.” Where is it exactly? What do you know about it? Does it still exist? What do you think of the image?
Here’s a comment from the community:
Tom Stransky: I believe it is now the site of Clinton Community College. BTW – a great institution which helps many people obtain skills to lead productive lives.
He’s right! This hotel is now the site of Clinton Community College in Plattsburgh, NY. According to Wikipedia, the hotel was opened on June 17, 1890 and it was closed in 1951 and converted into the college. It was also apparently damaged by a fire at one point and rebuilt in its hotel days.
