Vintage Postcard: Ross Mansion

Frequently we share a different historic image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Do you recognize the building featured in the postcard above?

The caption tells us that it is: “The Ross Mansion, Essex, NY.” The Ross family was an early merchant family that owned a lot of property in Essex, including more than one home. However, the portico of this house is distinctive. Do you recognize it?

Ken Hughes: I love the façade of this historic home.

This house is know as “Hickory Hill.” It sits at the top of Church Street where it crosses with Elm Street. Do you notice anything about the home that has changed in its appearance today compared to the photo?

The back side of the postcard has no information about the manufacturer or date, and it was never sent.
