Frequently we share a different historic image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
The caption on this black and white postcard states: “Split Rock from Crater Club, Essex, NY.”
Split Rock is a recognizable land feature jutting into Lake Champlain for many familiar with the area. You can see Split Rock Lighthouse just to the left of the center of the image; unless I’m mistaken? What do you think?
The Crater Club in Essex still exists today! This gives us a good understanding of where exactly this photograph was taken. But when?
The backside of the postcard says “Published by the Collotype Co. Elizabeth NJ and NY.” As you can see there is no message, so this one was never mailed. And there is no postage stamp with a date to help narrow the timeframe for the postcard’s creation either.
