Frequently we share a different historic image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Do you recognize the building featured in the postcard above? It’s actually in a neighboring town and not in Essex itself!
You may not have recognized it if you’re trying to figure out which building it matches today as it is no longer standing. It’s in the area where Ballard Park is in Westport, NY. However, some community members knew it right away. Here’s what they had to say:
Dianne B Lansing: The Westport Inn. Had our wedding reception on this lawn shortly before they tore the building down.
Dorinda Uhl: Westport Inn <3
Do you have any stories about the Westport Inn to share?
Here’s the original version of the postcard with its caption that reads, “Main Building, Westport Inn, Westport-On-Lake-Champlain, NY. H.P. Smith, Mgr.” I’m guessing HP Smith was a manager of the Inn at this time. What do you think (or know)?

The back side of the postcard is dated 1920, so this image likely dates to that year or shortly prior to it.
