At the College For Every Student Conference Center and Lake Champlain Yoga & Wellness in Essex, NY
“Breathe, Stretch, Connect, Grow” are the themes for the Up North Yoga Conference taking place in Essex, New York on Saturday, October 25. At this, the first Adirondack yoga conference, the Up North Yoga Conference features nationally-known yoga practitioners in a one-day event for yoga enthusiasts throughout the northeast. Lake Champlain Yoga & Wellness in Essex and The Yoga Tree in Keene are hosting the event at The College for Every Student Conference Center on Main Street in Essex, NY.
“In the past fifteen years, yoga has become firmly planted in the Adirondack and Champlain Valley communities,” said Michelle Maron, owner of Lake Champlain Yoga & Wellness. “We are so pleased to work with the Yoga Tree to expand our connections to yoga and celebrate healthy living.”
Robin Shaver, director of Yoga Tree, said:
“Yoga benefits everyone. It’s predicted that the Adirondack population is aging. Yoga helps build strength and creates healthier lifestyles for seniors. It also meets the needs of younger people who move here and want to continue their yoga and wellness practices. So, Yoga helps attract and retain the next generation of north country communities.”
Up North Yoga Conference Activities
The Up North Yoga Conference has a full schedule of activities. After registration from 8 – 9 a.m., Justin Wolfer will lead a workshop titled, “The Art of Balance,” to explore how people can move their bodies and find balance in their day-to-day lives. Justin, who got into yoga as a means to rehabilitate from injuries sustained in college athletics and is now the director of The Skillful Action Yoga Training Center, notes that “Seeking perfections is an wonderful goal and failing is your initiation into greatness—you’ll never know what you want until you fail at it. From there you can rise like the sun.”
Debbie Phillip, who founded True North Yoga in Schroon Lake, leads the next section which explores how yoga creates a happy and purposeful life. Following a lunch featuring local organic food, Ayruvedic practitioner and counselor Carmen Maron Walker leads a session describing how Ayurveda, Yoga’s sister science, combines seasonal dietary, characteristic body types, and daily lifestyle activities to foster understanding of each person’s approach to healthy living through the seasons.
The late afternoon workshops feature Lynda Garrand, owner of Trinity Yoga in Plattsburgh, who will “elevate the spirit” with Kundalini Yoga and deep gong relaxation. This strengthens the body, balance the glands, and soothes the nervous system through the magical healing vibrations of the yoga and the gong. The final workshop is a celebration of drumming and dancing led by Patrick Siler, who has played drums for twenty-five years and is executive director of the Adirondack Shakespeare Company.
