Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Do you recognize the landmark featured on this postcard? Where is it? What has changed? When do you think this was created?
The community recognized it right away!
Bryan Nelson Elder: The Champlain Bridge!
Ann Dickinson: Crown Point Bridge? 1929.
This is the Champlain Bridge or Lake Champlain Bridge (sometimes referred to as either) located in Crown Point, NY connected to Chimney Point, VT.
The caption along the top reads: “New Bridge Across Lake Champlain Uniting the States of New York and Vermont.” That’s a little ironic as that bridge pictured no longer exists! A new one was built in it’s place and completed in 2011. The original bridge was completed in 1929 and was demolished in 2009. Learn about information about the old bridge and the new bridge at these links.
We shared another vintage photograph of the bridge in the past. Take a look at it here: “Vintage Photo: Lake Champlain Bridge.”
