Ascent Wellness, located within NEW Health at 2885 Essex Road in Essex, NY, offers physical, occupational and massage therapy. It was recently featured in the Press Republican in an article entitled “Ancient practices, modern application” by Ashleigh Livingston.
Learn the story of Ascent Wellness founder and physical therapist Brian Trzaskos, who when injured about eight years ago found that traditional physical therapy methods were not enough for him. Instead he found success in tai chi and qigong, which inspired him to start his own practice that focuses on these ancient Chinese exercises.
In addition to offering traditional manual therapy, including joint manipulation — soft-tissue-release, muscle-energy, deep-tissue and craniosacral techniques — and neuromuscular therapy, Ascent Wellness designs personalized programs for clients that incorporate tai chi and qigong as therapeutic tools to rehabilitate the body. (Press Republican)
How are tai chi and qigong helpful for rehabilitation? Trzaskos explains that these two disciplines and their movements are similar and often combined, the only difference being that tai chi involves choreographed motions.
Engaging in these practices, he continued, calls for people to align their posture, pay close attention to their center of gravity, shift their weight mindfully and coordinate their breath with their movements.
Such movements, Trzaskos noted, match up almost exactly with traditional exercises that might be used to rehabilitate neck, shoulder or lower back injuries except they are done slower and more rounded, which is better for muscle strengthening and friendlier on joints. (Press Republican)
Along with treating clients for their physical therapy needs, Ascent Wellness offers a number of tai chi and qigong classes for the local community. Trzaskos is also working on the productions of three instructional DVDs for others to learn and practice the techniques at home.
