Safely Supporting Your Shoulderstand

Join Michael for an in-depth exploration of Sarvangasana: shoulder stand. According to Iyengar, “The importance of Sarvangasana cannot be over-emphasized. It is one of the greatest boons conferred on humanity by our ancient sages…it is the Mother of asanas.” This pose benefits the endocrine system and postural muscles, and even helps to flip your perspective for a while! In order to do a shoulder stand safely, Michael will guide students through a steady, progressive sequence of poses and movements. This workshop will allow participants to bring the experience forward with them, so they have the tools to practice the pose properly in the future. If you doubt your ability but wish to participate, please feel free to contact Michael. All levels are welcome!
Grounded in Gratitude – Hip-Openers

Our hips support us perpetually, whether sitting or not. As the gateway to our spine, they support our freedom of movement as we walk, jog, hike, skate, or ski. Within the hips we find some of the largest joints and strongest muscles of the body, and constriction of those muscles can cause tightness and restriction. This workshop will explore ways to develop more freedom in the many dimensions of the hips, moving from discomfort (dukkha) to a place of greater ease (sukkha). Through poses intended to create space and stability, participants will benefit from Michael’s guidance through supportive movement. All levels are welcome!

Chair Yoga with Micheal Fergot
Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:30-11:30 am

This fall at Lake Champlain Yoga & Wellness, join us on Tuesday and Thursday mornings 10:30-11:30 am for a chair yoga class with Michael. The use of a backless Iyengar chair, intended for the practice, provides additional support to each student. With a stable platform aiding posture and allowing for steady movement, each class guides participants comfortably through effective and accessible postures.
These chair practices:
- Reduce joint strain by supporting the body
- Increase strength and stamina by supporting some bodyweight during practice
- Improve flexibility by giving us access to an ever-increasing range of functional motion
- Increase our ability to balance, and to prevent and recover from falls
- Decrease stress, increase ability to relax and become more focused
- Allow us to breathe more deeply and fully.
There are many benefits for any individual, but chair yoga is particularly well-suited for those who are aging, recovering from a surgical procedure, feel heavy or sedentary, or have any health concerns that they would like to be empowered to respond to. Thanks to the chair providing additional support in the practice, participants have full access to the many benefits of yoga: strength, flexibility, stress reduction, balance, and overall well-being and joy. If you have limited range of motion, are challenged by balance, and wish to experience these benefits, chair yoga is for you.
